What is carbon footprint?
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, carbon footprint is defined as "the amount of greenhouse gases and specifically carbon dioxide emitted by something (such as a person's activities or a product's manufacture and transport) during a given period."
What does carbon footprint have to do with HVAC and why should we care?
The short answer is that every HVAC system uses power. That power comes from a power station. These power stations runs on a fuel source. One of the fuel source's byproducts upon being combusted is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is just one of many "Greenhouse Gases" that are naturally found in Earth's atmosphere. According to scientists, carbon dioxide as a molecule is acting as an insulator to thermal radiation from Earth.
Not only is increased amounts of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere but there is even more making its way into our oceans. When carbon dioxide reacts with water we get something called carbonic acid. According to the NRDC and also mentioned by NASA, the oceans have become over 30% more acidic since the Industrial Revolution. These values directly effect the ocean life and all of those who directly or indirectly depend on it.
By making HVAC systems and buildings more energy efficient, we can directly impact future generations.
